Integumentary System
Navigational overlay for skin and its appendages. Skin is the most visible aging organ and a uniquely accessible window on aging biology: it combines intrinsic (chronological) aging with photoaging (UV-driven), making it a natural testbed for interventions (retinoids, procedural resurfacing). The dermal-epidermal compartment is rich in stem-cell, senescence, and extracellular-matrix biology.
Tissues & organs
- skin โ the organ; intrinsic vs photoaging
- epidermis โ outer epithelial layer; barrier function, keratinocyte turnover
- dermis โ connective layer; collagen/elastin matrix, the main site of wrinkle/laxity biology
Cell types
- keratinocytes โ epidermal barrier cells
- melanocytes ยท melanocyte-stem-cells โ pigment cells; exhaustion drives hair-greying
- langerhans-cells โ epidermal-resident immune sentinels (overlap with immune-system)
- dermal-fibroblasts โ ECM-producing; senescence/SASP drives dermal thinning
Aging phenotypes
- skin-aging โ the integrative phenotype (wrinkles, laxity, atrophy)
- androgenetic-alopecia โ patterned hair loss
- hair-greying โ melanocyte-stem-cell exhaustion
- cherry-angioma โ benign vascular proliferation of aging skin
Key interventions & axes
- retinoids (class), tretinoin, tazarotene, bakuchiol โ collagen-stimulating topicals
- Procedural: dermatologic-resurfacing, microneedling, chemical-peels
- ECM: collagen I, mmp-1; uv-protection
