Respiratory System
Navigational overlay for the lungs and airways. This system is currently a planned area of the wiki — no dedicated lung page exists yet. Lung aging is characterized by declining elastic recoil, enlarged airspaces (“senile emphysema”), impaired mucociliary clearance, and a strong cellular-senescence component: idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is one of the canonical senescence-driven age-related diseases, and the lung is a frequent target of senolytic and senomorphic research.
Key aging themes (pending dedicated pages)
- Cellular senescence: alveolar epithelial (AT2) and fibroblast senescence drive IPF — see cellular-senescence, senolytics
- Stem-cell exhaustion: decline of AT2 progenitor capacity
- Inflammaging: elevated lung inflammatory tone; overlap with immune-system (alveolar macrophages)
