The lifespan of Korean eunuchs

TL;DR

Min et al. analyzed genealogical records of 81 court eunuchs from the Joseon (Chosun) dynasty (Korea, 1392–1910) who were castrated in boyhood and compared their lifespans to age-matched intact male aristocrats from the same era. The eunuchs lived an average of 70.0 ± 1.76 years — 14.4–19.1 years longer than intact male aristocrats from the same era — and three of the 81 eunuchs survived past age 100 (ages 100, 101, and 109). The authors claim that castration (and thus reduced lifetime androgen exposure) extends male lifespan. The analysis attracted immediate scrutiny: Le Bourg 2015 argued the datasets are too small and confounded by socioeconomic status to support the conclusion, and that no statistically significant advantage can be established once uncertainty is properly accounted for.

Study Design

Population and data source

Records from the Yang-Se-Gye-Bo, a genealogical registry of Joseon court eunuchs, yielding 81 eunuchs with verifiable birth and death dates out of a total of 385 recorded in the registry. Castration occurred in boyhood (pre-pubertal or early adolescent — boys lost reproductive organs in accidents or underwent deliberate castration to gain palace access before becoming a teenager), eliminating lifetime testicular androgen production. Comparator groups were three non-eunuch noble families of similar social status from the same era: (a) Mok family (n=1,126; age range 15–100), (b) Shin family (n=1,414; age range 13–95), and (c) Seo family (n=49; age range 20–81). Additionally, average lifespan of kings (n not given; 47.0 ± 3.21 years) and male royal family members (45.0 ± 2.79 years) were reported as further reference points. The Yang-Se-Gye-Bo was cross-validated against the Annals of the Chosun Dynasty and Diary of the Royal Secretariat.

Critical Appraisal

Le Bourg 2015 critique

Le Bourg 2015 1 published a formal response in Gerontology titled “No Ground for Advocating that Korean Eunuchs Lived Longer than Intact Men.” The specific criticisms (reported from DOI metadata and secondary citations):

  1. Sample size too small to establish statistical significance with adequate power.
  2. Comparator group selection — the intact men comparators are not clearly matched on all relevant socioeconomic and health covariates.
  3. Potential survival bias in the genealogical record — men who died young may be systematically under-represented in historical registries.
  4. Centenarian frequency in a cohort of 81 cannot reliably be interpreted given uncertainty in historical age recording (off-by-a-year errors compound with rare events like centenarians).

Le Bourg’s conclusion: the data do not provide adequate grounds to claim that castration extends human male lifespan.

Strengths

  • Rare natural experiment. Pre-pubertal orchiectomy is not repeatable ethically in modern human research. Joseon court records represent one of the few documented populations of lifelong-castrated men with approximate birth/death records.
  • Controls for socioeconomic status. Restricting to court nobility attempts to equalize access to food, healthcare, and safety — confounds that typically advantage high-status groups.
  • Consistency with animal data. The reported direction of effect (castration extends lifespan) is consistent with observational animal data in cats, dogs, and laboratory mice — see androgen-deprivation-longevity-hypothesis.

Weaknesses

  • Letter format. No published abstract; limited statistical reporting (group means and box plots reported; specific test statistics and p-values are not stated in the main text — supplemental information referenced but not OA-accessible); peer-reviewed but with condensed methods typical of correspondence format.
  • n=81 — one of the smallest human lifespan cohorts in the longevity literature.
  • Historical data quality — age recording in Joseon-era genealogies carries unquantified error, especially for deaths at advanced age.
  • Confound: court eunuchs’ lifestyle differed in multiple ways from intact men — dietary, physical activity, role-specific stress profile, and possibly health monitoring within the royal court. These cannot be fully separated from androgen deprivation.
  • No biomarker data — mechanism not testable from mortality records alone.
  • No replication — no independent eunuch cohort has been analyzed with comparable methods and sample size.
